IQ & 'brain drain'

Big projects, brain drain

I get a sense of deja vu when reading about Samak's planned mega-projects. Nearly 30 years ago, New Zealand's then prime minister Sir Robert Muldoon implemented his "Think Big" strategy, in which the government borrowed heavily and pumped the funds into large-scale industrial projects which were predicted to create trickle-down benefits in the form of jobs and revenue.

This never happened. The projects turned out to be white elephants, causing a large fiscal deficit and a recession which prompted many New Zealanders to emigrate to Australia.

When reporters asked Muldoon if he was concerned about the brain drain caused by skilled New Zealanders emigrating to Australia, Muldoon said he wasn't: "I look at it as a positive thing, as it will raise the IQ in both countries."

How's that an IQ of a prime minister?

Well, presumably he didn't choose to migrate I suppose.
